Essential Oils as a Cooking Ingredient

3 minute read or the time it takes to slice some tomatoes and basil

Essential oils come from plant distillation through steam or cold pressing. This means that essential oils that are certified pure are all natural and organic and absolutely safe of consuming.

I do recommend that you do your own research as well before choosing a brand that you are okay with consuming. The brand of choice for me is doTERRA. Certainly, we can consider essential oils as cooking ingredients.

For those that are still weary of using pure essential oils, take for example lemon extract or a lemon bakery emulsion, you can see that it contains water, propylene glycol, acacia gum, xanthan gum, sodium benzonate (preservative), and natural flavor.

Why consume all of those extra, unnecessary, and let’s not forget not good for you ingredients, when you can have a pure lemon essential oil with only lemon peel as the only ingredient? Any else with me?

Let’s stop blindly buying what we’re used to and what’s being promoted the most and start looking deeper into what we’re consuming. Certified pure essential oils can be used to complement our cooking and accent specific dishes, dessert and even drinks. If you’re interested in learning how you can get the BEST oils in your home, keep reading to find out how.

Why Use Essential Oils?

In order to make our cooking much easier and more flavourful then it’s best to try using essential oils. Essential oils have healthy benefits and possess potent flavours and aromatics so instead of spending a lot of time buying and preparing various cooking spices and herbs you can simplify it by adding a few drops of edible essential oils like Coriander, Clove, Ginger, Lemon and a multitude of other oils. Definitely, you can save a lot of money, time and sweat too.

Tomato Basil Quiche

Today, I’m sharing this simple and delightful recipe that you can cook at home and enjoy with your family. It’s made of healthy ingredients with Basil essential oil which is commonly used in cooking to add a fresh, herbal flavor to meats, pastas, and entrée dishes.

  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 medium onion (sliced)
  • 2-4 tomatoes (sliced thinly)
  • 4 eggs (beaten)
  • 1/2 cup cream (or whole milk)
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 3-5 pieces  fresh basil leaves (for garnish)
  • 2 drops Basil Essential Oil
  • 1 9 inches unbaked deep dish pie crust (store bought or homemade)
  • 11/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese, divided
  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Then, bake pie shell in preheated oven for 8 minutes.

  2. Meanwhile, add olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.

  3. Sauté onion until soft and afterwards remove from skillet.

  4. Slice the tomatoes thinly and then toss them in a teaspoon of olive oil with the basil essential oil. Add salt and pepper to taste.

  5. In the same skillet, place the marinated tomato slices, then make sure to sauté 1 minute on each side. (You can also roast the tomatoes in a pan in the over which really heightens the sweetness from the tomatoes)

  6. Remove the tomatoes from the skillet

  7. In a bowl, whisk together the eggs and cream. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

  8. In the bottom of the pie crust, spread 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese.

  9. Then layer the onions on top of the cheese, then place the tomatoes on top.

  10. Pour over the whisked egg mixture.

  11. Don’t forget to sprinkle the top with the remaining 1/2 cup of shredded cheese.

  12. Bake in preheated oven for 10 minutes. Reduce heat to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C), and bake for 15 to 20 minutes or until filling is puffed and golden brown.

  13. Finally, pull out from oven, garnish with fresh basil leaves, and slice and serve warm.

This dish is totally delicious, hearty and easy to prepare so ensure to include this in your
meal planning for this week. You and your family will surely love it. Stay healthy and happy!
